Summary
This submission is by a Coalition of Blacks and Black Ethnic Groups in the UK, all listed in the Appendix 1 (together called “Coalition”) led by Social Justice Partnerhips.
The purpose of this paper is to provide input on the impact the Covid-19 pandemic is having on members of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community in the United Kingdom. It seeks to demonstrate that there is a disproportionate impact on this community, the consequences that it has for this community and the reaction of this community to the UK Government Covid-19 response as well as the planned future response.
This report is based on a survey titled, “The Impact of Covid-19 on Blacks and Black Communities” (Impact Survey), conducted at short notice to meet the deadline for submissions to the Women and Equalities Select Committee, and it sought feedback on the communities’ feelings on the government response and the impact on the community. A total of 206 people completed the survey of which 90% identified as black and 62.4% as women. In that survey 90% identified as Black and 62.4% as women.
This paper provides recommendations based on the survey and the Public Health England (PHE) Report “Beyond the data” – Understanding the impact of Covid-19 on BAME groups” (PHE Report) for further discussion and investigation.
